Weekly Wrap Up

Early in the week we did some goal setting. Your child was asked to come up with goals for reading, math, home, and personal/social. Then they picked three of them and wrote them on a banner that’s now hanging in the hallway outside of our class. Ask your child to talk with you about the goals they set, and why they thought those goals were important to them.

It’s that time of year when Lost and Found fills up quickly! If your child is missing anything, please make sure to remind them to look for their missing items. In order to make sure your child keeps all items that belong to him/her, please take some time to write their name in coats, backpacks, lunch bags, and anything else that comes to school. Not only will that help make sure your child gets his/her things back, but it will also make sure someone doesn’t accidentally take something that looks like theirs, but belongs to your child.

Third grade is the year that your child begins working on keyboarding! We do this through the use of a program called Typing Club. Your child can even do this at home! If he/she logs into the Chrome browser with their district Google account information, and then accesses the site, they can pick up where they left off at school by selecting the option to save their data. Once they login again in school, they won’t have to repeat the section they did at home. The key is to make sure they login with their district Google account. We’ve done this in school before, so your child should be comfortable doing it at home if they want to, and if you let them online at home.

Here's what we're learning about next week:

• Science: Force and Motion/Simple Machines

• Math: Division

• Reading and Writing: Finish organizing notes by sub-topic/chapter. Determine if chapters have enough information, or need to be combined or need more research, begin writing chapters.

Weekly Wrap Up

It might have been a short week, but it’s been a busy week! We took some time to examine a few online resources, all of which can be accessed from home, and I want to share with you. Login information for each is written on their printed newsletter that came home on Friday. 

The first is enVision Math. This is the online resource for our math curriculum. After logging in, students and parents can view the instructional video from the day. To access it after logging in, click on the “Explore” button on the right side of the banner. From there click on topic, and then select the lesson. Students (and parents) can also access the book once logged in.

Next is MyOn. This is a free ebook site! On Thursday students took an interest inventory and placement test. Books were then recommended for them that are appropriate to their level and of interest to them. After reading a book students take a brief, 5 question, comprehension quiz. I am able to access and analyze their reading data. Login as your child and you can see their data, too. Last is Typing Club. This is a keyboarding site, which steps students through learning to keyboard, including graphics which show the correct finger placement and usage. This program retains student progress if logged into with their District Google credentials.

• Reader’s Workshop: Understanding figurative langage
• Writer’s Workshop: Putting together all the pieces that go into personal narrative writing
• Math: 3-digit addition and subtraction with regrouping.

Weekly Wrap Up

Did you hear we’re learning how to keyboard, and your child can practice with the same program at home? Generally we take about half an hour on Fridays to build our keyboarding skills. Sometimes we sneak in a few extra minutes other days if we finish something early, but not very often. We’re using the website, Typing Club. If your child logs into the Chrome browser at home with her/her district Google account information, and then accesses the site through the district apps link in the browser (I call it the “waffle”), they can pick up where they left off at school. Once they login again in school, they won’t have to repeat the section they did at home. The key is to make sure they login with their district Google account. We’ve done this in school before, so your child should be comfortable doing it at home.

If you’re following us on Twitter you’ve seen the links to the Native American project presentations. The projects and the presentations are incredible! Your children worked so hard, and I’m so very proud of them! The projects will be on display in the hallway during conferences, and QR codes will be available so you can also view their presentations. If you don’t have a QR code reader on your device, you might want to get one before conferences.
